BanRisk is an accelerated educational program in
banking that combines extensive courseware with the SBG software. It is designed to
provide participants with a practical way of learning about banking through computer
simulated experience, where mistakes don't cost real dollars or customers. It succeeds by
using an innovative and balanced mix of team activities, comprehensive educational support
materials, and the most recent version of SBG.
Computer simulations provide more excitement than any
classroom instruction can offer. This, combined with the unique design of BanRisk,
enhances both the quality and the depth of the educational experience. BanRisk is
available under a usage licensing agreement or for larger groups directly from HRW in
seminar or distant learning formats.

HOW BANRISK WORKS
BanRisk participants work together in management teams of five or six members. Each team
is responsible for the operation of a four billion dollar bank.
Supplied with comprehensive educational materials and analytical tools, the participants
argue and debate issues, search out and analyze information, delegate tasks, and decide
upon goals and strategies - as they would in managing a real bank.
Throughout the program, team decisions are evaluated by the computer model in the context
of real world conditions. These evaluations come back to the teams in the form of detailed
financial statements of their banks. The participants analyze their results in conjunction
with economic, competitive and regulatory data by using specialized case studies provided
in the BanRisk package.
By actually managing a realistic bank, participants learn the complex interactions of the
bank's major components. They gain a better understanding of the information needed by
senior management and return to their jobs knowing how their day-to-day activities
contribute to the goals and profitability of the bank. Their performance improves and
their learning accelerates because they have a better understanding of the entire bank and
its policies, and they know how issues and events affect different sectors of the bank.
BANRISK IS UNIQUE FOR ITS COMPREHENSIVE
EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS
The theories are clearly explained. The BanRisk educational and analytical materials
provide participants with a firm foundation in all of the many business and banking
concepts they need to learn and apply during the simulation including economic value
planning and management. However, the materials are written and sequenced so that officers
from non-financial areas of the bank, such as systems, marketing, or personnel, can
understand the content and successfully complete the program.
The educational value of the computer model is maximized. The computer model's quarterly
financial reports of the simulated banks' performance consist of large quantities of hard
financial data. With BanRisk's extensive case studies, participants have the tools to
isolate and assess accurately the critical information. Detailed analysis of results is
essential if the benefits of using a complex simulation are to be realized. Click here for a more in-depth discussion of learning with SBG and
the BanRisk courseware.
BANRISK IS
COST EFFECTIVE AND FLEXIBLE
The BanRisk educational package guarantees that participants realize the full educational
benefits of the computer simulation experience. BanRisk is designed to be used with or
without on-site instructors and in-house training departments can easily use the course
with a high level of success.
Management decisions made by BanRisk teams can be scheduled over any reasonable time
period. A variety of presentational formats can be used to fit the needs and time
constraints of personnel. When used in a one-week seminar format, the work is compressed
and participants usually make two decisions each day. With an evening decision, the
program can be shortened even more.
But BanRisk is unique because it is also one of the few programs that can be delivered
successfully over an extended period of time in distant learning formats without taking
personnel away from their normal duties. Groups compete in the simulation so most teams
work harder toward the end of the course than they do at the beginning.
To start a BanRisk program all the participants need are
the course materials and a few administrative details. Participants do not use the
software, they complete a form and submit it to a central source for processing.
Clerical staff can run the software and generate the reports for the teams in
less than one hour.
BENEFITS AND COST
By learning how a bank is managed financially, BanRisk participants learn how their work
affects other areas of the bank and how to apply a wide range of business skills and
financial concepts to their day-to-day job activities. While managing a computer simulated
bank, participants see how information and management decisions must be carefully
integrated with other operating areas of the bank in order to maximize profitability.
Participants use what they learn in different ways. Benefits differ for specialty areas of
the bank such as Treasury, Finance, Systems, Marketing, Administration, Product
Development, and so on.
